Since 1955, Pounds Floor & Tile has offered and installed flooring products to Austin area builders, contractors and homeowners.
Pounds Floor & Tile is a full-service business that provides carpet, vinyl, ceramic, laminate and wood.
Originally, the family-owned business concentrated on tile and eventually started sanding and refinishing wood floors. In the early 60's, carpet became a major portion of the business.
Vice President Larry Pounds said his uncles worked at a floor-covering store when they decided to go out on their own fifty years ago.
"Austin was a small college town back then," said Pounds. "They really had to work hard to drum up business. When my relatives first started out, they did business with the Univ. of Texas at Austin."
According to Pounds, the company moved to its current location at 8732 N. Lamar Blvd. in 1971.
"The employees at the first store had to vacate the facility because new interstate construction went right through the downtown area.
In 50 years, Pounds said the company's memorable accomplishment is providing its services for over 30,000 homes in Austin.
"The biggest change in the tile and flooring industry has been the consolidation in the builder business," explained Pounds. "They have all changed from local companies to national companies."
"Our company has been passed down from one generation to the next and I guess that is all we know. In the next five to ten years, we plan to be more diversified!"
